Workshop #3: Lighting in & out

3. Lighting In & Out 💡 (Workshop: Feb 07)

ARE YOU JUST ILLUMINATING A SHOT? OR ARE YOU PAINTING THE MOOD ITSELF?

The word "photography" literally translates to "writing with light." If you are just turning on lamps so people can see the actors, you aren't writing—you're just taking notes.

Lighting is perhaps the most powerful tool a filmmaker has to direct the audience's eye, establish depth, and create atmosphere. Whether you are shaping available natural light or building complex artificial setups, you are defining the reality of the scene. Proper lighting tells the audience how to feel about a character—is this person dangerous? innocent? conflicted?—before they even speak a word.

  • "Lighting 101" is about understanding the quality, direction, and colour of light. This knowledge allows you to sculpt your subjects and control the viewer's eye. Controlling light means controlling the very visual texture of your scene.

  • High-key lighting (bright and minimal shadows) can convey joy, innocence, or comedy. Conversely, low-key lighting (heavy shadows, dramatic contrast) is used to create mystery, fear, or serious drama. The skillful application of light directs attention and subtly communicates a character's internal state or the danger of their environment.

Join us for Workshop 3: Lighting In & Out.

From the physics of light to creating and controlling complex setups, learn how to paint the mood of your film.
